Evaluations & Therapy For Adults
Autism
Many undiagnosed, and diagnosed, adult clients work with Dr. Barta.
Autism can look different for adolescents and adults, especially after spending a lifetime trying to "blend-in". Signs of Autism for older adolescents or adults who are "high-functioning" may include:
Being too literal
Knowing when it is your turn to talk
Understanding what others are thinking or feeling
Challenges making and keeping friends
Copying others' behavior to try and fit in
Sensory differences (under or overwhelmed more than others)
Tone of voice differences
Special interests
Being detail oriented
Becoming upset with sudden change in plans
ADHD & Executive Functioning
Many undiagnosed, and diagnosed, adult clients work with Dr. Barta.
Girls often go undiagnosed and untreated into adulthood. Women may more frequently present with the ‘inattentive’ type of ADHD, making it harder to detect in younger years. Symptoms may include:
Poor self-image
Social obligation & relationship difficulties
Feeling ‘scattered’
‘Zoning out’
Poor frustration tolerance
Poor organization
Difficulty starting or finishing tasks (often unpreferred)
Difficulty staying with a task
‘Mom Brain’
Losing everyday objects (e.g. keys, cups, wallet)
Underachieving
Adversity & Trauma
You’re not alone - 61% of adults have had at least one experience with serious adversity before age 18.
About 3/4 people gain benefits from therapy. Signs therapy could be of benefit:
Feeling ‘stuck’
Frequent or bothersome illness / time off work
Difficulties doing or enjoying what you used to
Noticing things can ‘set you off’ to greater (or less!) degree than expected
Reoccurring thoughts about unpleasant experiences
Zoning out
Feeling a ‘need’ or ‘pull’ towards your phone, tv, other activities
Feeling more sad, tired, or lethargic than others
If you’re thinking about therapy (pssst…I’m a fan of it)
