What are evaluations?

Assessments from JB Psychological Services are a "detective like" look into functioning. Evaluations often include a variety of hands-on activities, interview, observation, and paper forms to help us better understand needs and strengths.

Do I (or my child) need an evaluation?

Evaluations can be an incredibly informative process for families, regardless of the outcome.

  • Learn more about needs and systematic methods to move forward
  • Gain a personally tailored "map" to know where to start
  • Apply for disability related services and supports.
  • Accelerate access to insurance approved intervention services such as Applied Behavioral Analysis or Speech Therapy.
  • Determine if your child may be eligible for additional services in schools or updated support.
  • Apply for accommodations on tests, such as extra time, small group testing, or ability to type.
  • Providing evidence that your child is gifted for eligibility purposes to particular schools or programs.
  • Mediating challenges or concerns between the school district and parents.
  • Clearly outline how you or your child learn best so that strengths can be accentuated, and challenges can be thoughtfully remediated or supported.

How long do evaluations take?

Evaluations can take anywhere from 3-12 hours divided over several dates dependent on need and referral questions. All evaluations include a 90 minute final feedback meeting in which the testing will be reviewed in addition to appropriate diagnoses and recommendations.  Examples of referral questions and estimated time are included below. These do not include the amount of time for an examiner to score, write report, and review results.
